Islington Area Guide
One of London’s favourite neighbourhoods, Islington combines relaxed café culture with period architecture and independent shopping with local landmarks. Cobbled back streets, arts and cultural institutions, comedy clubs and vibrant street markets – there’s something for everyone, while nearby Regent’s Canal and Islington Green provide natural beauty in an urban setting.
A truly vibrant neighbourhood, you will often find locals and visitors alike enjoying a coffee at one of the many cafés lining the streets of Angel, perusing the antiques shops and hunting for bargains at the bustling street markets.
Art & Culture
From the Almeida Theatre – situated in a listed building – to small galleries, lovers of the arts will find plenty here. Just along the Regent’s Canal, the Victoria Miro exhibits contemporary art and sculpture, while in Canonbury Square, the Estorick Collection houses the UK’s only dedicated compilation of modern Italian art. The Angel Comedy Club is a neighbourhood favourite, while at world-famous Sadler’s Wells, dance is celebrated in all its forms, from performances by the Royal Ballet to hip-hop festivals. The striking Union Chapel, also a working church, hosts a diverse schedule of live music, talks and comedy, while for cinema goers, Screen on the Green provide chic viewing experiences of latest film releases.
Street scenes
Islington’s colourful street life is a haven for foodies, from its well-known Exmouth Market to a diverse collection of cafés, bars and street food options. A relaxed independent restaurant scene includes Trullo, praised for its simple, authentic Italian dishes and Westerns Laundry, known for its seafood small plates and communal dining. On Islington Green, you’ll find Bellanger. We’re an all-day brasserie combining Europe’s Grand Café tradition with the Mediterranean’s relaxed art de la table. Open from breakfast through to dinner, our menu features seasonal, southern European dishes, a terrace and a convivial cocktail bar that celebrates the French tradition of L’Apéro – ideal for pre-and post-supper drinks.
We always keep tables free on our terrace for those passing by. And for those of you with dogs, they are more than welcome at Bellanger!
Shopping
Upper Street is Islington’s popular shopping destination, replete with independent fashion, big brands and lifestyle stores, plus plenty of hidden gems just off the beaten track. Contemporary interiors shop twentytwentyone is located here, while renowned concept store Atelier Abigail Ahern is on nearby Essex Road.
Camden Passage is a picturesque back street filled with independent stores and antiques shops; chocolate aficionados won’t want to miss dropping into the atelier of artisan chocolatier Paul A. Young. Nearby, Chapel Street’s eponymous market has been looking after locals for more than a century. On Sundays, it turns itself over to Islington Farmers’ Market, offering a wealth of seasonal, organic produce.
Take a stroll
For those of you who enjoy a leisurely walk, then a stroll along the Regent’s Canal never goes amiss.
You can walk from the west to Angel, via King’s Cross (or indeed the other way around!), or onwards to the equally enticing neighbourhoods of east London and the beautiful Victoria Park. Whichever route you choose to take, you will not be disappointed.
